HP Compaq nx6125 laptop Preview Part I

Compaq NX6125 - 64 Bit Turion Laptop, TOP secure laptop with low price

HP Compaq nx6125 laptop review, The screen is nice and large, the nx6125's 15-inch screen a bit large and its 1,024-by-768 maximum resolution

HP Compaq Business Notebook nx6125 - Turion 64 ML-37 2 GHz - 15" TFT .

The new Compaq NX6125 from Hewlett Packard is a great example of the notebook bargains available on the current market. The NX6125 is equipped with a 60GB hard drive, integrated biometric fingerprint sensor, wireless connectivity, bluetooth, a firewire port, 3 USB ports, and a 6-in-1 card reader. At 6.1 pounds, it's not too heavy to carry around, and with its 15-inch screen, sizable hard drive, and dual-format optical drive, it's quite capable of doing double duty as a desktop computer. Which segues neatly with the arrival of the HP Compaq nx6125, which so clearly is taking care of business, users that is. This is the first Compaq to sport an AMD processor and it has taken the arrival of the Turion 64-bit processor to make an impression. Turion is being billed as the rival to Intel’s all-dominant Pentium M chip and while we’ve yet to see any real battery gains from the Turion, the use of 64-bit processing means its more than powerful enough for notebook use.

HP is looking to target budget-minded business users with its new notebook, the Compaq nx6125. This new machine is powered by an AMD’s Turion 64 processor and only runs around $1,149 USD. It is aimed at price conscious business people requiring a fully featured mobile office. The NX6125 has security features not found in other notebooks, including a fingerprint scanner, and it differs from the other NX-models by utilizing AMD's CPU with its PowerNow! dynamic processor loading and variable speed fan. It runs quiet and cool when you're just doing wordprocessing but comes alive with full force when you need the power. This thin-and-light system packs in a wealth of features, including a fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and ATI graphics. Despite the inclusion of a rather large 15-inch screen, the nx6125 weighs a not too heavy six pounds. HP covers connectivity with the inclusion of three USB 2.0 ports, FireWire, and S-Video, plus a 5-in-1 memory card reader on the front panel.

The nx6125 features a healthy 512MB of 333-MHz DDR memory and a reasonably fast 5,400-rpm hard drive, the ATI Mobility Radeon Express 200Ms use of 128MB. It is nice that it has the 128mb, but It would do much better with a slightly better video card as the 128MB of main system memory for graphics is not ideal. With wireless turned off, the nx6125’s battery lasted 4 hours and 2 minutes, and with it on, it ran for around 3 hours flat which is pretty comparable to most laptops currently on the market that have a Centrino processor.

At this price point you find the Turion 64 ML-37 CPU running at 2GHz and is complemented by 512MB DDR SDRAM and a Seagate 60GB hard drive with a 5400rpm rotational speed. As a base specification this isn’t too bad but if you consider that the nx6125 has a list price of $1200 and suddenly you’re looking at something special. In use, we found that this notebook could more than handle daily tasks. If you want to edit a little video or audio, it’ll more than handle that too. A standard three-year parts and labor warranty with 24/7 toll-free tech support should ease the minds of HP’s small and medium sized business customers and the price will make.

HP Compaq nx6125 Form and Design

HP Compaq nx6125 Form and Design, even though the surrounding material is not magnesium alloy, the combination of ABS plastic and carbon fiber makes the nx6125 a very durable machine, build quality are very goodThe nx6125 looks and feels much like its more expensive sibling, the HP Compaq nc6230 ($2,299), but there are some subtle design differences. Instead of dual pointing devices, the nx6125 comes with a touchpad only. Also, the palm rests are laminated with a scratch-resistant layer. And even though the surrounding material is not magnesium alloy, the combination of ABS plastic and carbon fiber makes the nx6125 a very durable machine. Weighing around 6 pounds, this Compaq laptop isn't what you would call ultralight, or ultraportable, but it is durable, with it's scratch resistant lamination, HP spill-resistant keyboard, and panel protection system. These features all help to protect the notebook's dark chassis from the inevitable nicks, and scratches picked up on the road.

We like that the NX6125 comes with a biometric Fingerprint reader, which provides users with a powerful level of laptop security. The notebook is also powered by an AMD Turion processor, a chip that is rapidly gaining popularity with laptop manufacturers the world over.

The build quality far exceeds that of any consumer notebook in the same price range. Even as the thing weights as much as 6 lbs (2,7kg) you can pick it up from the extreme lower corner and turn it around without significant flexing - a feat you dare not repeat with many consumer notebooks which crackle and squeek as they twist under their own weight. To summarise, the Compaq NX6125 isn't the most attractive looking notebook on the shelf, but it should provide durability, security, value and performance, for small business road warriors.

The overall build feels very secure and durable. The hinges are very firm; you'd sooner lift the laptop than open it if you tried to open it with one hand. The frame offers considerable resistance to twisting and the screen shows no ripples. In the same spirit, the nx6125 is incredibly quiet, and produces only a slight whir when either the hard drive or optical drive is in use. Even the quietest sound setting will drown out whatever subtle noise the machine makes.

HP Compaq nx6125 Screen

I found the nx6125's 15-inch screen a bit large and its 1,024-by-768 maximum resolution a tad low. The ideal measurement for a notebook this size is 14 inches with a 1,400-by-1,050 resolution, but that's just me. In addition, the matte display fends off glare well. This is a display you can stare at for a long time without getting tired - unlike those over-bright over-saturated consumer LCD's that look sexy until they've burned holes to your retina. And having a less bright screen does give you more battery life.  But lighness and thinness have their price; the display flexes quite a bit. I can see now the purpose of those metal covers on many notebook displays.

Open the lid and you’ll find a 15-inch LCD. The screen is nice and large, though we prefer widescreen displays over the nx6125’s traditional 4:3 screen. On a plane or bus, this extra height can be cumbersome. The screen looks washed out if you view it from above with the lid open even slightly less than 90 degrees, making the nx6125 a poor choice for frequent flyers. The XGA (1024 x 768) native resolution of the panel is easy on aging eyes, though, and side-to-side viewing-angle performance is excellent. Technically the LCD looks very sharp with no distortions or backlight leakage from the corners. The scratch-proof anti-glare coating works well for every condition expect for direct sun light. The hinges for the display are sturdiest I've seen on a notebook and there is no visible display cable between - all wiring is integrated within the hinges.

HP Compaq nx6125 Keyboard and Touchpad

The nx6125 looks identical to other laptops in HP's Compaq business line. The 6.1 pound notebook is encased in magnesium alloy, which shields the notebook from bumps and excessive heat. The Compaq's full-size keyboard makes for comfortable typing, and I really like the rubber mouse buttons as well. The typing experience on the Lenovo 3000 N100 is still much better, though, thanks to that machine's excellent keyboard. The full-sized keyboard is comfortable to use, though the key clicks are a bit too noticeable when typing. The touchpad with dedicated scroll area is responsive, and its mouse buttons are wonderfully quiet. Fleet buyers should note that the nx6125 does not feature dual-pointing devices (touchpad and pointing stick) as on other business-class notebooks.

The keys on the keyboard are actually larger than on my desktop keyboard and their action rivals that of the recent Powerbooks. HP designers have used the full physical width of the notebook to give you a natural size keyboard - unlike many silly notebooks out there. Above the keyboard you’ll find dedicated buttons for controlling the volume and Wi-Fi radio, as well as a convenient presentation button, which lets you set your preferred options for presentation mode (VGA-out, power-saving mode, off, and so on) and enable them with one press. The touchpad is as good as I've used and also contains a scroll-bar area. The buttons however make a very loud clicking noise.

HP Compaq nx6125 performance

HP Compaq nx6125 laptop performance reviewHP includes the AMD Turion processor, instead of the Intel Celeron, successfully keeping the price down and performance up. HP will continue to use the budget Intel Celerons in its nx line. The nx6125 with the Turion ML-37 (rated at 2.0 GHz) performed very well on our SYSmark 2004 Internet Content Creation (ICC) tests, scoring 150. The Turion 64 ML-32 has a nominal power rating of 35W but AMD's PowerNow! technology adjusts the clock rate of the CPU dynamically as you need it. This saves your batteries and keeps everything cool but allows for immediate throttle up when your application requires it. This also keeps the notebook nice and quite since the fan only comes on when needed. It still doesn't measure up to the ThinkPad T43 with its Pentium M 750, which brought in higher scores on both ICC and Office Productivity tests. The 53-Wh battery lasted 3 hours 28 minutes on our BatteryMark tests, which is good.

The nx6125 uses an integrated graphics solution—the ATI Mobility Radeon Express 200M—which eats up 128MB of system memory, since it has no dedicated memory of its own. Locking up a quarter of the system's resources in graphic memory can slow down the system, especially if you're using a CPU-intensive application like Photoshop

HP Compaq nx6125 Security

The NX6125 is sold as a 'secure notebook'. It comes with HP's ProtectTool
s that give you BIOS level admin and user security features which can be tied with different access level passwords and authentication done with biometric fingerprint scanner. An optional Secure Smart Card reader is available in place of the PC-card slot. Other security feature include HD Drive Lock, Power-on security, Kensington notebook lock slot and Altiris HP Local Recovery.

HP integrates a fingerprint reader--a first for HP notebooks--that works in tandem with the company's Protect Tools software bundle (preinstalled). The system, however, does not have a built-in Trusted Platform Module (TPM) like the nc6230, for an extra level of security. The nx6125 uses HP's common docking solution, which the company deploys across its business line. We’re pleased to see HP has included a fingerprint reader on its entry-level business model. Along with the TPM circuitry, the reader makes the nx6125 as secure as most laptops out there. The keyboard is spill-resistant, and the hard drive is shock-mounted (though there is no active protection system as on pricier models). The nx6125 also does not yet have embedded wireless broadband as an option. If you want EV-DO or HSDPA data service, you’ll need to get a PC Card solution.

HP Compaq nx6125 wireless broadband service

The wireless is a standard Broadcom BCM4318 b/g mini-PCI card with two integrated antennas inside the display for optimal reception. It's hard to find a benchmark to set it against but I haven't found a problem yet getting full speed 54Mb/s Wi-Fi access from the places I've been to. It supports all the latest encryption algorisms inc. WPA/PSK etc. Although the card is accessible it is doubtful one can go and change it to a different model without the BIOS disagreeing with the new card. One very nice feature is the blue indicator light on the quick-launch button and on the edge of the notebook that tells you if you've left the wireless on.

HP Compaq nx6125 Bundled Software:

HP One-Touch Button Software, HP ProtectTools Security Manager, HP Wireless Assistant, Symantec Norton Antivirus, InterVideo WinDVD Creator, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Intervideo WinDVD Player, BIOS Configuration for HP ProtectTools, Credential Manager for HP ProtectTools, Drivers, Sonic RecordNow, hp help and support, Hp mobile printing for notebooks, HP Local Recovery, Synaptics touchpad driver

Customer Support:

HP customer service has always been below standard from everything I've heard. Personally, I don't really think you could ever expect to get highly personable service and support from a large corporation like HP. I bothered HP's online support a few times before my notebook came. They proved to be rather slow and not very knowledgeable of their products. The support and drivers on HP.com are lacking the drivers you need to reinstall Windows XP. I didn't pay for any extra support, I only got the standard 1year warranty. If you choose to reinstall your own copy of Windows XP then beware for the task ahead of you. You need to make your own XP install CD using NLITE. You also need to backup the c:swsetup folder to a DVD. HP.com doesn't provide you with anything!

Fast Review:
