The 17" screen Inspiron 9400 features an available 256MB nVidia Geforce Go 7800 graphics card and up to 1.86GHz Intel Duo Core Processor in current listed configurations. The HP Ultra-Capacity Battery can be charged separately by plugging a Smart AC adapter directly into it. Also available is the optional HP Extended Life Battery, an eight-cell lithium-ion battery that provides up to an additional five hours of battery life with the added convenience of being able to charge the battery while docked. Both the HP Compaq nx9400 and 6300 Notebook PC series safeguard sensitive information with layers of security protection, including the HP ProtectTools suite, fingerprint reader, integrated smart card reader and integrated TPM 1.2 module.

One of the first laptops with Intel's new Core Duo processor to hit the street, the Dell Inspiron 9400 inaugurates the company's new entertainment line of laptops with a bang. In addition to its top-shelf processor and graphics card; its bright, 17-inch widescreen display; and other leading edge technologies, the Dell i9400 adds a few welcome multimedia features not found on the model that it will eventually replace, the Inspiron 9300. These include a five-in-one media card reader and Dell's MediaDirect software, though there is no integrated TV tuner.

Designed for users needing high-performance and widescreen functionality combined with mobile convenience, the HP Compaq nx9400 Notebook PC series features a 17-inch widescreen display, Intel Core Duo processor and powerful 3D graphics. In addition, the nx9400 is 35 percent thinner and 17 percent lighter than current HP desktop replacement notebooks. It also delivers up to four hours of battery life, which represents up to 129 percent more battery life over previous HP 17-inch notebooks. We think the slightly less expensive HP Pavilion dv8200 is a better deal for basic users who want more features than performance, but the Inspiron 9400 owns the other end of the spectrum as an incredibly powerful laptop that can speed through virtually any multimedia task from video editing to gaming.

Compatibility across all HP business notebook accessories enables simplified deployment and a hassle-free work experience. Designed to withstand the hazards of the mobile lifestyle, these notebooks offer the HP Mobile Data Protection System to help protect data from shock and vibration, scratch-resistant in-mold lamination and HP Panel Protection.

Note: Dell has recently changed the video card option worldwide from Nvidia's top-of-the-line GeForce Go 7800 to ATI's Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics processor. As a result, we expect the gaming performance of the current crop of Inspiron 9400 to suffer compared with the Nvidia GPU-equipped models. There have been no comments from Dell regarding this move.

Since this product is not listed on the Dell USA site it's not clear yet if they'll use the same model number for the U.S. equivalent model. In the past, Dell has somewhat varied model numbers between Europe and the USA. We expect an announcement will be made this week at CES regarding any similar U.S. notebook release.
